The Four Olds: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas

This chapter takes place in 1966, May and June. The historical event that happened in this chapter was that Red Guards destroying the Four Olds.

Plot: Write a summary (5 to 7 sentences) of what happens in the chapter.
It was Sunday afternon. Ji-li, Ji-yong, and Ji-yun go to Grandpa Hong's bookstall which is located down the alley. When they were sitting and reading books, An Yi comes she calls them to go and see people breaking a sign at the Great Prosperity Market. They hurry to the Great Prosperity Market. People were breaking the sign because it was four olds. At the same time they have argument with Du Hai and Yang Fan. They argue about yang-san an 'umbrella', then Du Hai tells Ji-li that she has a lot of four olds, like: she says good morning and good afternoon to the teachers; respecting the teachers; listening to the teacher and your parents; having a housekeeper, etc. This questions Ji-li.

I found out that Ji-li supports destrying Four Olds and she also respects and listens to the teachers. New information that I found about Chairman Mao is that he wants everyone to destroy the 'Four Olds": old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits.

Analysis: Why is this chapter important to the story?
I think this chapter is important because this chapter tells us how people thought everything was Four Olds, even just saying good morning to the teachers. Also it tells about how Red Guards deal with the people who had old fashioned clothes.
